Slipcover Furniture: Matching Your Cover To Your Décor

Slipcovers have been around for years and they have more uses now than simply just protecting our furniture. They are inexpensive and they can help your furniture to look great too.

Slipcovers are designed to protect your furniture and they come in a range of different materials. From cotton to cloth, slipcovers are often known as clothing for your furniture. They are draped over the furniture and they help to keep it looking new and protect it from potential damage such as from children or pets.

Why Slipcovers Are Used For Much More Than Protection

Whilst slipcovers generally do a great job at protecting your furniture, it is not all that they are good for. They can also successfully improve the look of old furniture and they are not overly expensive either. Whilst you also may not have thought about it, slipcovers can help you to save money. This is because you can purchase cheaper, plain furniture and save money that way and spruce it up a little with slipcovers. Due to the fact that you can purchase designer slipcovers it really can help to make your furniture look really expensive. So you do not have to spend a fortune to get the look that you want, you just need to purchase a good slipcover.

Slipcovers also used to be used to keep furniture clean during the warmer months. They did this by using them in the summer months because usually the sweat would soak into the furniture and it would smell and need to be cleaned. By using slipcovers it avoided this and instead only the cover had to be cleaned which was easily done in the washing machine. However the slipcovers before used to be made from either vinyl or plastic and they were not very comfortable like they are today.

The reason that slipcovers used to be made from plastic is because they were cheap to make. They were generally mass produced within the United States of America and then after a while the furniture was also able to be mass produced and so the sale of slipcovers started to decrease for a while. Nobody seemed to mind whether their furniture ended up getting ruined because they could easily replace it. Now though slipcovers are popular again as people tend to care more about their furniture and it gives them the chance to brighten up the room too.

The main difference between slipcovers today and slipcovers in the olden days is that there is a larger variety available. They no longer come in only plastic or vinyl and they are a lot more comfortable to sit on. You can easily find something to suit your needs and you can even purchase designer slipcovers which can add a touch of luxury to your furniture.

Save Your Sanity: Use Slipcovers

Too many people don’t think about slipcovers when it comes to redecorating their home, yet slipcovers are an inexpensive tool that not only protects but also renews the loo of your furniture.

If you’ve spent several hundred dollars on a furniture suite for your living room, getting exactly the right color and fabric you wanted, you might wonder why on earth you’d want to hide that perfection with slipcovers.

Well, the answer is simple. Accidents happen. It’s better to strip off a removable slipcover and throw it into a washing machine, then have to re-upholster or replace the damaged fabric on one of the pieces of furniture of your perfect living room suite.

Because slipcovers are easy to put on and take off, there’s no need to have them on all the time, of course. Many people reserve them for certain occasions – for example when they are entertaining a group of kids during a birthday party, or on a Sunday for a football party.

In the past, slipcovers consisted of either plastic or vinyl, and they were ugly. Not only that, but a great many people left them on their furniture all the time! That’s no longer necessary today, of course.

Fabrics

There’s no need to buy slipcovers in plastic or vinyl today. You can get slipcovers in any fabric that exists, from cotton to chenille, from denim to damask, from leather to suede.

Designs

Slipcovers don’t just come in demure white or other solid colors. They come in floral patterns, in geometric patterns, even in plaids. They come in themed patterns – sports, holidays, and so on.

The Fit

Most people don’t want it to be obvious that they have slipcovers on their furniture, they want it to look as if the material on that furniture is what came with it originally. And with fitted slipcovers, this is easily achieved.

Slipcovers come in a variety of sizes, not to mention shapes, to fit all manner of chairs, couches, divans, futons, and even ottomans, and if you can’t find a slipcover that will fit your particular piece of furniture, you can always order one custom-made.

New or Renew

Slipcovers, therefore, are used not only to protect the original upholstery of your furniture, but also to give a new look to old, faded upholstery, so that you don’t have to go to the expense of re-upholstering it.

More than that, slipcovers are used in situational relief – to brighten up a holiday or birthday party, for example.

And if you’ve got a bunch of old, mis-matched furniture, the easiest way to make them look like a matching set is to buy a set of matching slipcovers for them!

Slipcovers – truly the workhorse of interior design.
