What should I look for in a sofa slipcover? What are potential problems with them?

sevenwndrs asked:

I have 2 small children and 2 cats. The cats (whom I have not declawed because they are indoor/outdoor), have tore up each corner of both my sofa & loveseat while using them as a scratching post. There have also been a few accidents while changing my baby’s diapers on the sofa. So I pan to get them cleaned and then slipcover them both. But there are a few styles of clipcovers ~ snug/hug fit, relaxed fit that hangs, and then a combo of both. I have noticed that the combo fit (the latest style) is most attractive. The problem here is that the snug area of this cover is on the exact spots that my cats used to scratch. I am thinking that they will be able to get their claws into this as well. And if they can, they will as they have done the same to every corner of every mattress in the house. So lets say I go for the relaxed fit, is there any suggestions of what I should look for? Any problems with certain ones? Am I wrong about the snug fit being a continual issue with the cats? Thanx!

i’m thinking about buying slipcovers for my chair and sofa, but i’m not sure where/how to measure the width

Lovely asked:

i know, it sounds like a dumb question, but my chair for example is a huge fluffy t-cushion chair so if a slipcover says that it fits chairs up to 43 inches wide, does that mean the cushion has to be less than 43″, from arm to arm has to be less than 48″, the back has to be less than 48″ or what? i’m completely confused.
oh my gosh! i don’t know why in the last two i said 48″ i meant 43″

Slip Covers For Furniture

Whether you have faded or torn fabric on your chairs, or simply want a new look, or want to protect your furniture, give slip covers a try.

I’ve just discovered the easiest way in the world to give my living room a brand new look. My old furniture, while very comfortable, was becoming worn out, with stains on a couple of the chairs and a rip on one of the cushions of the couch. (Ah, children, they’re so much fun, aren’t they?)

I was contemplating getting the furniture re-upholstered, but didn’t want to go to that expense, and I certainly didn’t want to go to the expense of buying new furniture, especially when there was nothing wrong with the old except for those cosmetic problems.

Then I discovered slipcovers!

It’s not necessary to re-upholster my furniture – and then go to the expense of re-upholstering it again should the new fabric become stained – when all I need to do is purchase relatively inexpensive slip covers, which I can replace again and again if it becomes necessary.

What I was impressed about was not only the vast array of designs that slip covers come in, but also the fabrics. I never would have thought you could get leather slip covers, but you can. Other fabrics include denim, suede, chenille, or cotton and damask.

The designs are nothing to sneeze at. There are hundreds of designs to choose from, from floral to plaid to geometric, to solid colors. They also come in themes for kid’s rooms – sports, horses, etc. Indeed, having slip covers for chairs in your kid’s room only makes sense!

I was also pleased to see that these slip covers come in a variety of sizes – they’ll fit my couch and my recliner, to say nothing of the straight chairs in my dining room. And of course they’ll fit love seats, futons and ottomans as well – any size furniture you’ve got! And if you can’t get something ready-made that will fit, of course you can always order something custom-made.

So I’ve gone out and picked out a wide variety of slip covers, because I’ve got big plans. My entire family comes here for the holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving, so I’ll cover the furniture with seasonal designs at that time.

If you decide to use slip covers on your furniture, make sure they are preshrunk and prewashed. Indeed, make sure they are machine washable so that they are easy to care for! Some fabrics of course will have to be dry-cleaned, but I always prefer to take the easiest possible way!

Home Decorating Ideas – Five Ways to Save Time, Money and Decorate With Style

nt to decorate or redecorate a room, but the budget is slim and you really don’t care for shopping all that much? That’s okay…if we started a club using this criteria I’ll bet we’d have a lot of members! Some of us don’t have the time or desire to shop all day for the absolutely perfect accessory (or whatever it may be) for our home. Plus, the budget in many households is stretched pretty thin, and we already know the answer to the question, “Should I buy this pretty nic-nac or spend the money on food?”

However, these scenarios don’t change the fact that we still want to create a home that is unique to our lifestyle, expresses who we are and is a place we love to come home to. The challenge is to accomplish these goals while maintaining our budgets and daily schedules.

Caring for Your Loose Covers

If you own loose covers your concern will be to preserve their quality and good looks.

As time goes by daily life can cause stains, damage and wear. It’s important to know how to remove, clean and refit.

However you may not need to remove and wash your covers at all. By using arm covers and following the tips below, you really can keep that showroom finish.

How to keep the showroom finish for years and years:

Loose cushion covers can be rotated regularly and reversed to give even wear. Plumping up the cushions regularly helps to keep the covers looking full and fitted. Regular redressing of the loose covers can really help in maintaining appearance. This includes straightening the seams. Any excess fabric can be tucked into the pockets between the arm or back and the seat area. Keep out of direct sunlight. Fading is unavoidable on any fabric exposed to direct sunlight for long periods. Accidental spills can be spot cleaned very effectively if you are quick. It’s a good idea to do a test in a small area which isn’t visible. One chenille and velvet fabrics, the pile will flatten with use. This can result in a ‘shaded’ area where there is contact e.g. on the arms. This is normal with this type of fabric but vacuuming with a brush attachment can help.

Top Tip: Vacuum your covers regularly using a brush attachment. Accumulated dirt in the fibres can cause wear.

How to machine wash your covers:

Use a colour enhancing liquid detergent. Check the wash label in the covers just to check that they can be washed. Some heavyweight fabrics are dry clean only. Typically the correct temperature is 30 degrees C. The same is true if hand washing. Lightly spin or line dry cotton covers. Run a cool iron over cotton covers while damp. Polyester covers should be dried on the line and do not need ironing as they are almost always crease free.

Top Tip: A good tip is to wash all components of the cover at the same time. With all that fabric this may be easier said than done.

How to re-fit your covers:

Remove all loose cushions. Find the sewing label and stand at the back. If there is a zip undo it. Pull the cover down over the back until the cover fits snugly along the top edge. Continue to pull the cover down over the arms and seat base tucking in firmly where appropriate. There is usually a gap between the arm or back and the seat base. If the covers have piping, make sure the piping sits correctly on the arm scrolls. Pull down and smooth the fabric and make sure the valance sits straight at floor level. Close the zip if there is one. Finally pull on the separate cushion covers and make sure the piped edges are straight, and replace the cushions.

Top Tip: The sewing label is almost always at the back of the cover in the centre. All that fabric can seem a bit daunting. Stand at the back of the chair or sofa, find the label and it will soon fall into place.

If Loose Covers are damaged:

If snagged threads are caused accidentally on stretch (polyester) fabrics, draw them through to the reverse side i.e. so the thread is on the inside. Arm covers are a great help to protect and prolong the life of covers. If the damage is serious be careful to make sure that any replacements are colour matched to other covers. You may need to send a sample.

Top Tip: Avoid sharp objects – If you have cats try and discourage them from scratching. There are a few products available and some good advice at catscratching.com.

Leather Sofas

Leather sofas come in a variety of styles, but are limited in color choices, which is understandable. They are typically available in styles such as Euro contemporary, contemporary, traditional, and designer. Leather sofas are available manufactured locally and abroad.

Leather sofas add class, style, distinction, and sophistication to any room décor and are very easy to keep clean. However, most are not pet friendly and you have to take great care in your decision to purchase a leather sofa that is pet friendly.

Leather sofas are comfortable and stylish and keep their good looks for years. Leather sofas have their own unique and wonderful scent, too! And the more expensive leather sofas will be hand tied. Leathers used in these sofas are rich, supple, and some styles are ‘depressed’.

Leather sofas are available in club styles, sectionals, custom made, and you can even have a leather slipcover made for your existing sofa!

Also available with your leather sofa are pieces such as chairs, ottomans, and love seats. So the possibilities are endless!

Leather sofas and other pieces will probably put you in mind of the older European homes, pubs, clubs, and inns; where gentlemen sat around drinking their ales and brandy and smoking pipes while they talked or perused newspapers. Now you can bring that old world charm into your own home.

Prices vary from one place to another and from one distributor to another, but you can be sure of one thing. Leather furniture, as a rule, is not cheap and if it is too inexpensive? Be wary. When leather sofas become too inexpensive, you have to question their authenticity and quality.

Unless you don’t mind spending a large sum of money, be careful of purchasing imported leather sofas because of shipping costs. The sofa itself may not be too expensive, but shipping can be quite expensive.

But with a little research, some diligence, patience, and care, you can eventually end up with a leather sofa and/or matching pieces that will bring you pride and satisfaction for years to come!
