Slipcover Furniture: Matching Your Cover To Your Décor

Slipcovers have been around for years and they have more uses now than simply just protecting our furniture. They are inexpensive and they can help your furniture to look great too.

Slipcovers are designed to protect your furniture and they come in a range of different materials. From cotton to cloth, slipcovers are often known as clothing for your furniture. They are draped over the furniture and they help to keep it looking new and protect it from potential damage such as from children or pets.

Why Slipcovers Are Used For Much More Than Protection

Whilst slipcovers generally do a great job at protecting your furniture, it is not all that they are good for. They can also successfully improve the look of old furniture and they are not overly expensive either. Whilst you also may not have thought about it, slipcovers can help you to save money. This is because you can purchase cheaper, plain furniture and save money that way and spruce it up a little with slipcovers. Due to the fact that you can purchase designer slipcovers it really can help to make your furniture look really expensive. So you do not have to spend a fortune to get the look that you want, you just need to purchase a good slipcover.

Slipcovers also used to be used to keep furniture clean during the warmer months. They did this by using them in the summer months because usually the sweat would soak into the furniture and it would smell and need to be cleaned. By using slipcovers it avoided this and instead only the cover had to be cleaned which was easily done in the washing machine. However the slipcovers before used to be made from either vinyl or plastic and they were not very comfortable like they are today.

The reason that slipcovers used to be made from plastic is because they were cheap to make. They were generally mass produced within the United States of America and then after a while the furniture was also able to be mass produced and so the sale of slipcovers started to decrease for a while. Nobody seemed to mind whether their furniture ended up getting ruined because they could easily replace it. Now though slipcovers are popular again as people tend to care more about their furniture and it gives them the chance to brighten up the room too.

The main difference between slipcovers today and slipcovers in the olden days is that there is a larger variety available. They no longer come in only plastic or vinyl and they are a lot more comfortable to sit on. You can easily find something to suit your needs and you can even purchase designer slipcovers which can add a touch of luxury to your furniture.

A Slipcover For Every Season

Slipcovers make decorating a living room – or any other room – easy. With a vast array of fabrics and designs available, it just makes sense to protect your furniture with slipcovers.

If you’ve spent several hundred dollars for a matching set of furniture for your living room (otherwise known as a suite, and consisting of two chairs and a couch), the last thing you want is for one of those three items to become stained by drink, food, or pet accidents.

The logical thing to do is put slipcovers on them.

Slipcovers of the past – made from plastic or vinyl – are definitely in the past! These days, slipcovers come in a vast variety of designs and colors, as well as fabrics, so that you are sure to find something you like. So, you’ll be able to protect your suite with these slipcovers, maintaining that matching upholstery look, while the overall design of the furniture matches as well.

What kind of slipcovers should you get?

Well, that depends entirely on how much use your living room suite will have to bear. If you have a lot of visitors who use the living room, or kids that spend a lot of time jumping up from the chair or couch, you’ll want a sturdier fabric than if the room is used in a sedate manner.

Fabrics

Fitted slipcovers come in a vast array of fabrics. Cotton, denim, damask and leather are only a few of the choices. Visit your local home furnishing stores to see and feel these fabrics in person, but if you don’t see anything you like don’t hesitate to surf the web to see what’s available.

Colors and Patterns

Slipcovers are so popular that there are a great many colors and patterns available. So much so that it’s highly doubtful that you won’t be able to find something you like. Again, if you don’t see anything you like in your local stores (and you should always support your local stores if possible) then surf the web, as you’re sure to find something.

Color and pattern are important considerations, of course, as you want them to blend in with the decor in your living room.

Why slipcovers

You may be asking yourself why, if you just purchased a brand new suite because you liked the pattern and color of the fabric, you should cover it up. Well, you might be able to get that fabric in a slipcover as well, so you’ll just be putting an extra layer on those pieces of furniture!

It’s not necessary to put your slipcovers on your new suite and leave them there. Slipcovers are made to be removable, after all. Use them only at certain times – when you’re having a party, for example, and take them off when done. In that way you’ll protect your new furniture and keep it safe for a long time to come.

Making Old Furniture Look New Again With Slipcovers

With the price of quality furniture always on the rise, it’s no wonder more and more people are looking for ways to rework their existing pieces to their liking. Unfortunately, there’s a limit to what can be accomplished without spending a small fortune. Upholstery offers one option, but the expense of quality upholstery can be prohibitive and in some cases, more expensive than simply buying new furniture. Another common option for covering worn, stained or otherwise unsightly furniture is through the use of slipcovers. Long considered appropriate only for college dorm room or rental furniture, slipcovers have recently been afforded a new level of popularity.

Slipcovers offer an easy method for getting more use from your existing furnishings as there’s little work involved when fitting them. They can be used to bring new life to worn out chairs, sofas, loveseats and even futons, but are just as often used to bring new life and color to furniture that is still in good shape but simply unappealing.

The secret to making old furniture look new again with slipcovers is to shop for the most form fitting fabric or material available. One size fits all options rarely look good, and most offer saggy coverage that makes furniture look as though it’s in storage. The closer the slipcover comes to your furniture’s existing dimensions, the better it will look. There are a few select slipcover manufacturers who produce stretchable slipcovers that are form-fitted to various furniture types. These offer a distinct advantage in that the materials are designed to stretch where it’s needed and retain their elasticity where it’s not. The end result is a slipcover that looks as though it’s part of the furniture.

For some sofas, loveseats and chairs with removable cushions, slipcovers are available for both the main bulk of the piece as well as the cushions. The separation between cushions and the bulk of the piece afford a custom upholstered look without a custom upholstered price. The more definition a slipcover provides, the more it looks as though it belongs on the furniture.

Colors are an option that should be reserved for individual tastes, but there are some hard and fast rules that usually result in a more palatable look. For antique style furnishings, patterns seem to be the best option, while modern furniture does well with solid colors.

One way to make a slipcover look less conspicuous is through the liberal use of decorative throw pillows and afghans. Decorative throw pillows can rest on the areas that are hardest to form fit while draped afghans take the focus off the underlying material.

Slipcovers can be found online from several retailers and offer an affordable alternative to replacing what you already own.

Where Can I Find A Funky (lime green or bright purple) Slipcover For A Loveseat?

tubulartweety asked:

I really need a funky slipcover for a worn out couch that were putting in my teenage daughters room. She’s fine with it but only if we find a cool slipcover to put over the loveseat. I checked all of the bedbathandbeyond and linens-n-things. I need funky colors and maybe a funky print. Her whole room is lime green and bright purple(kind of like bright lavender) and she has a circle square theme going on. Any and all help is appreciated, thanks so much.
I can’t sew and i don’t know anyone that can
